RECESSION BRINGS HISTORIC CHANGE TO WORKPLACE DEMOGRAPHICS
Women Now Virtually Half the U.S. Workforce
USA Today writes: Women are on the verge of outnumbering men in the workforce for the first time, a historic reversal caused by long-term changes in women's roles and massive job losses for men during this recession.
Women held 49.83% of the nation's 132 million jobs in June and they're gaining the vast majority of jobs in the few sectors of the economy that are growing, according to the most recent numbers available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For the First Time More Women than Men Employed in Canada
The Toronto Star writes: It has finally happened. More Canadian women than men were in paid employment during the first half of 2009, according to Statistics Canada.

THE RISE OF ACCIDENTAL OR “NECESSITY” ENTREPRENEURS
Despite the recession, the number of the new businesses actually grew in 2008. One recent study found that of the people who had found work after a recent layoff, one in nine had done so by becoming self-employed. Today, many are finding that they are being pushed by the recession into trying things they may have always wanted to do but probably never would have tried otherwise.
From the New York Times: CALL them accidental entrepreneurs, unintended entrepreneurs or forced entrepreneurs. . . The most recent Index of Entrepreneurial Activity by the Kauffman Foundation showed a slight uptick of new businesses in 2008 — a full recessionary year — over 2007. . . Accidental or by design, entrepreneurship is on the rise again this year. LegalZoom.com, the online legal document service, says the number of new businesses it helped to form was up 10 percent in the first half of the year, compared with the period a year earlier.
From the Huffington Post: Much has been written about the entrepreneurial opportunities offered by recessions—companies like FedEx, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft were all formed during downturns. But, entrepreneurship may be naturally ad hoc. Here’s how Nobel Prize-winning tech entrepreneur (and co-founder of Intel) Gordon E. Moore put it: “There is such a thing as a natural-born entrepreneur. . . But the accidental entrepreneur like me has to fall into the opportunity or be pushed into it.”
